Uicipeid:Gaelic Wikipedian project

O Uicipeid
(Air ath-sheòladh o Gaelic Wikipedian project)

Fiosrachadh ann an Gàidhlig

Beginning in January 2017, the National Library of Scotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Wikimedia UK are supporting a project to develop Uicipeid, the Scottish Gaelic-language Wikipedia, with the appointment of a Gaelic Wikipedian in a part-time, year-long role. The Gaelic Wikipedian, Susan Ross, will run a program of training events and edit-a-thons, develop Gaelic-language resources to teach new users how to edit and collaborate with the existing Gaelic wiki community to support them in strengthening the scope and quality of Uicipeid.

This page will provide information on ongoing and future project ideas. If you are interested in getting involved in the project, or in contributing to Uicipeid, you are welcome to contact the Gaelic Wikipedian, Susan Ross.

Aims and objectives

[deasaich an tùs]

This is a one-year project with the goal of growing and improving Uicipeid. It aims to extend participation in this 21st century Gaelic-medium resource by creating opportunities for Gaelic speakers to progress and exercise their Gaelic literacy skills in a creative, informal, collaborative environment. At the same time, the project creates and shares information about Gaelic-language speakers and their history and culture, building a lasting resource to connect Gaelic speakers across the world. The Wikipedian in Residence will develop resources to teach participants how to edit and work with Gaelic speakers, groups and organisations in the community to hold both face-to-face and web-based events.

Background

[deasaich an tùs]

Uicipeid currently has over 14,000 articles on a wide range of topics. There is a small group of dedicated editors who have curated the Wiki over the years to achieve this number of pages.

Wikipedian-in-Residence

[deasaich an tùs]

Several Wikipedian- or Wikimedian-in-Residence projects have been set up in the UK where a Wikimedian dedicates time to working in-house at an organisation. In 2017, there are 5 active Wikimedians-in-Residence: at the University of Edinburgh, the Bodleian Library, the Wellcome Library in London, the Hypatia Trust, and at the National Library of Wales.

How do I get started?

[deasaich an tùs]

There are help pages in Gaelic under Cobhair with some basics for getting started. These will be expanded as the project continues. If you can’t read Gaelic, please see the following questions.

  • I'm interested in Uicipeid but I don't have much Gaelic / I can't write in Gaelic. What can I do to take part?

The project is considering ways in which non-fluent Gaelic speakers, or fluent speakers who are starting to write in Gaelic, can take part. There may be opportunities to help with photo and image development. Keep an eye on the project pages for initiatives and ideas in the coming months. In the meantime, you can learn about the Wikipedia approach and how edit through the Wikipedia Adventure on the English-language wikipedia, or check out the help pages in any other language you know.
  • I'm interested in Uicipeid but I don't have any Gaelic. Can I just use the Content Translation tool to create pages?
Please do not use machine translation to create pages. The technology is not at the stage where the result is understandable. As a small wiki, we don't have a large number of editors willing to take on the task of trying to turn machine translations into coherent prose and your content is likely to be deleted. Please keep an eye on these pages instead for future ideas of how you can helpfully contribute.

The events programme is currently available on the Gaelic project page here.
