I think everything should be written according to Modern Gaelic, as the GOC intended, so I think we should change all accent letters to graves: ó -> ò. What do you think? --AileanMacRaith 08:03, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

That's reasonable. I like the idea of using GOC spelling but (a) I don't have a dictionary that uses it and (b) the GOC appears to be in the process of changing its mind again, so even if we do use it we'll be wrong again in a year or two. The two different accents do indicate two different pronunciations -- that's why I like them -- but okay, I'll just use graves for the moment and if I introduce other grammatical or spelling errors, just fix them or let me know what I should have written.

As a matter of interest, the policy of some other Wikipedias is to allow all variant spellings that appear in some dictionary rather than to impose specific spelling rules on contributions. We don't have to do that but given the controversy which still exists over the new spelling and given the fact that people like me only learned the old spelling (and have dictionaries and books which use nothing else), I think that we should spend our time on adding content and removing English rather than on worrying about old or new spelling too much. -- Derek Ross 17:49, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I completely understand the argument for using the different accents, but I just think it makes things easier to read if we try to stick to the same format - especially for learners, as being honest, the majority of users here will be learners including myself.
I take your point. -- Derek
I have taken steps to draw more users to it by emailing Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and Commun Luchd-Ionnsachaidh. Could you see to it that the Scots Gaelic Wikipedia is added to the English list of languages? I don't know how to do this. Also, I see that some of the interface has been changed to Gaelic. How do you do this? I'd like to see an entirely Gaelic interface including the logo. Cheers. --AileanMacRaith 18:06, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Ailean, I will happily make you a sysop which will allow you to work on the interface since your Gaelic is much better than mine. My only proviso is that you write a little in Gaelic about yourself on a user page first (just click on your name in the link above). This is so that people can communicate with you more easily and know a little bit about you. If you look at my English userpage you will see that it doesn't have to be much.

I too want an entirely Gaelic interface and will be working towards it as time permits. As for how to do things, the best idea is that you read the material on the English Wikipedia which explains it all much better than I could. That is basically what I am doing in any case. A lot of that material will need to be moved here and translated in any case. -- Derek Ross 18:21, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)
