English: Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) The familiar red grouse is a subspecies of the willow grouse, and one which is endemic to Britain. Red grouse are the quintessential moorland bird and are often heard calling or seen in flight as they fly low over the ground away from danger. It has isolated southern outposts in the south - notably Dartmoor - but northern England and Scotland are its strongholds. Many moorland areas are 'managed' specifically to encourage red grouse, the heather being burned periodically to encourage the new growth of shoots. At close range the males shows red wattles and white feathered legs, the female is a greyer brown with buff coloured legs and no wattles.
